Monday, February 28, 2022 (HOL) – European Union (EU) leaders, meeting in a far-sighted manner, have said they will increase sanctions on Russia and provide military support to Ukraine.

EU Commissioner Ursala Von der Leyen, speaking to the media after the meeting, said the EU was providing arms to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia.

“The European Union (EU) is once again backing Ukraine, and the sanctions imposed on the aggressor, Putin, Russia, for the first time in the history of the European Union, are providing military support to an invaded country,” Von der Leyen said.

Von der Leyen said that they were also imposing sanctions on Belarus, which is Russia’s main ally in the war.

“We are also targeting another aggressor, Lukashenko. Lukashenko’s aggression has escalated into a brutal war against Ukraine, so we will impose new sanctions,” said Von der Leyen.

The new EU sanctions include a ban on all Russian airlines and a ban on Russian broadcasters in Europe.
