MOGADISHU (Xinhua) — Somalia on Thursday confirmed the death of a senior military officer during the ongoing security operations against al-Shabab militants in the southern region.
Mohamed Abdiwahid, Commander of the sixth battalion of Somalia’s special forces (Gorgor) was killed in a fierce battle between Somali National Army (SNA) and al-Shabab at Jalable village in the Middle Shabelle region on Thursday.
“The hero who has paid the ultimate price for his country’s stability has been in the military service more than 10 years,” the SNA said in a statement.
The deceased soldier who was trained in Turkey was among several soldiers who are conducting security operations to flush out al-Shabab militants in the Middle Shabelle region.
Somali army chief Odowaa Yusuf Rage who is leading the security operation in the Middle Shabelle region said the forces have killed more than 100 al-Shabab insurgents and recovered several weapons including equipment during the operation kicked off last week.
The army chief said the military operation, which is still underway in the Middle Shabelle region, will be sustained until the insurgents who have conducted terror attacks to kill and maim innocent residents have been wiped out from the region.
